MEDIA RELEASE                                                                                                                                                15 FEBRUARY 2016

Organisers of the Kimberley Diamond Cup presented by Kumba Iron Ore this week announced the schedule of contests and training clinics leading up to the world championships in Kimberley in October.

This year’s schedule includes four Grand Slam events in the Northern Cape, Western Cape, Gauteng and Kwa-Zulu Natal as well as fifteen Skateboarding for Hope community outreach activations throughout the country. The action kicks off with the Cape Town Grand Slam Regional Qualifiers during the Ultimate X action sports event at the Grand West Arena on Saturday, 27 February.

South Africa’s largest action sport fest provides a perfect platform for exhilarating skateboarding combat as top skaters battle it out to impress the judges and score a coveted entry to Kimberley. The qualifiers take place at 11h20 with Cape Town’s best going up against each other. The Rider Cup team contest happens at 18h25 with the finals going down from 19h50.

According to Tim McFerran of World Skateboarding Grand Prix, 2016 will prove to be an auspicious year for the global skateboarding industry with the possibility of the discipline being included in the 2020 Beijing Olympics. “Skateboarding as a sport has literally reinvented itself during the past couple of years and I believe that the Kimberley Diamond Cup has played a major role in this transformation. For the International Olympic Committee to actually consider including skateboarding in Beijing is a massive boost for the sport. 2015 saw a record-breaking attendance of over 22 000 people at the skatepark. Last year’s final showdown between Nyjah Huston and Luan Oliveira was most probably the most exciting head-to-head jam ever seen in a contest,” mentions McFerran.

McFerran believes that these successes substantiated the Northern Cape Provincial Government’s commitment to support skateboarding and to promote the sport to the youth of South Africa for the past four years. “We are convinced that we’ll see massive talent during this year’s contests with the best skateboarders in the country eager to earn their slot at competing against the world’s best. It is also extremely encouraging to see the number of local skateboarders, who have turned professional and are now competing in international contests around the world,” mentions McFerran, president of the World Skateboarding Federation, which was instrumental in raising the profile of the sport and bringing it to the attention of the International Olympic Committee.

As part of the Northern Cape’s youth development mandate, the Skateboarding for Hope road show will travel throughout South Africa to promote the magic of skateboarding. Stops are scheduled for the Northern Cape, Gauteng, the Cape Peninsula, KwaZulu-Natal, Southern Cape and the West Coast.

The jam-packed skateboarding roster culminates in the Kimberley Diamond Cup world championship event at the world-class Kumba Skate Plaza in Kimberley from 3 – 8 October 2016. Last year saw skaters representing 40 countries descending on the Diamond City to earn the title and huge prize purse.

The KDC event has also become a key contributor to the socio-economic landscape of the Northern Cape. The week-long event does not only translate into impressive figures for the tourism industry in terms of incoming tourists, accommodation and hospitality expenditure as well as job creation, but also serves to highlight South Africa’s largest province as a unique travel destination.
